Today I’ve got five tips on how to save for your down payment.

While some think that you need to save 20% for a down payment, this is definitely not the case today. You can get loans at 3% or 5% down, and there are even some first-time homebuyer programs with 100% financing.

But if you do need to save for a down payment, I’ve got a few tips for you to think about. If you use these five tips, you’ll have enough for a down payment saved in no time.

  1. Figure out ways you can cut back. What things are you spending money on that are unnecessary expenses? Things like eating out less often, brewing your coffee at home instead of going to Starbucks, and cutting your cable expenses can all add up to your savings.
  2. Consider doing things yourself. While it can be fun to get expensive haircuts or have your nails done, there are ways to make these activities less costly. Using coupons to have your hair done and painting your own nails at home are two ways to save.
  3. Let other people know about your goal. If the people in your life know that you’re trying to save money, it can help them be more conscientious. Instead of inviting you out for dinner, they might invite you over for dinner instead. There are plenty of ways to have fun at home as opposed to going out and spending extra money.
  4. Take on extra work. Finding ways to earn some additional income can help to speed up your savings. Whether it means taking on extra hours at your job or selling unused items online, there are plenty of ways to pad your wallet.
  5. Save on purchases. You would be amazed at how much you can save using coupons and sales. Looking for the best deal doesn’t take much time and it can make a big difference.
