Matthews once know as Stumptown due to the remains of the forests that covered this section before it was settled was a little village in a farming community. It has grown over many years and now rubs elbows with Charlotte.
In 1874 a railroad connecting Stumptown to Charlotte and Monroe was built. To honor a director of the railroad, Mr. Watson Matthews the town soon changed its name to Matthews.
Now Matthews covers about 17.18 square miles and contains a variety of businesses and single family housing. A quaint downtown, attractive neighborhoods, churches, quality schools, an outstanding hospital and medical facilities make for a full-service community.
The streets of Matthews welcome you with small town charm while small parks and natural areas dot the community making it a desirable place to live.
